It’s a fantastic journey full of new connections
Jeļena Picilēviča, Solutions Developer at SEB in Riga, began her career at SEB through the bank’s Tech Programme.
Philip Wang joined SEB as part of the Tech Programme and now works as a data engineer focusing on developing data flows. In this role, he uses technology and code to enable SEB's offering in trading, enhancing speed, accessibility, and customer experience for currencies, commodities, and interest rates.
“My team is part of the Trading domain, and we use our technical skills to create data flows that our colleagues use when they help customers with their business. The technology we work with directly supports the business.”
– Joining the Tech Programme at the bank has been an awesome experience. Right from the start, it’s clear that we’re here to dive into all the tech the bank uses. One of the best parts was getting to know other trainees and colleagues in various roles. That broad exposure opened my eyes to how everything fits together and how the bank works. Not only do I learn about the tech and the business, but I build a professional network that I know will be valuable in my career going forward.
– I collect data, enrich and convert it, and then create reports for my colleagues and SEB's customers. This way, they get an overview of the current situation before making decisions and can mitigate risks related to currency trading, for example.
– Working as a data engineer in trading is exciting because it’s such an important part of SEB. It’s fast-paced and thrilling. SEB is really pushing ahead with new tech, and we get to do cool and challenging things. Right now, we are working on a cloud solution where we have come significantly further than many similar players. It’s a new business area that’s emerging, and I’m glad to be part of that journey. Another advantage is that my role exists in many different domains within the group, so I can have some flexibility in my career here if I feel the need for change.
– For me, the social aspect is important. I have great colleagues in my team, and most of them are developers just like me. We have the flexibility to work remotely two days per week, but many of my closest colleagues are in the office more often than that. We sit in state-of-the-art premises in Solna, and there are many benefits to coming here—like good lunch, gym, and various activities. And good teamwork, of course.
– Before I started here, I had no idea how much goes on within the bank. And above all, how incredibly much we do to facilitate business for companies. Now I know it’s a fantastic workplace for those who want to work with tech. I see many paths forward within SEB, and as the next step, I would like to understand the business logic behind the data I work with.
