It’s a fantastic journey full of new connections

Jeļena Picilēviča, Solutions Developer at SEB in Riga, began her career at SEB through the bank’s Tech Programme.
Before joining SEB’s Tech Programme, Jeļena worked as a Finance Controller for IT projects. However, her growing interest in technology led her to make a career shift. “I have a bachelor's degree in finance, but I decided to requalify,” she explains. “I started attending various tech-related courses and boot camps. I even pursued an official programming technician qualification recognised in Latvia, which included not only studies, but also an internship and a government exam.” After completing her studies, Jeļena knew she wanted to combine her knowledge of finance and tech. For her, SEB’s Tech Programme was the perfect opportunity.
How was your experience in the Tech Programme?
“It was an amazing journey and such a unique experience,” Jeļena says. “The programme provided a safe environment to learn and grow my skills, and it also allowed me to meet so many people from different backgrounds – participants from both the Tech Programme and the International Trainee Programme, as well as employees from all areas of the bank.”
The programme wasn’t just about technical development; Jeļena enjoyed taking on leadership roles during activities such as the Business Challenge. “I was given the role of team lead, and I learned so much. We were taught how to manage our teams and time. It was a challenge, but I grew a lot from it.”
One of Jeļena’s highlights was a three-day kick-off event in Stockholm. “There was a lunch where many employees from different parts of the bank joined us,” she says. “I was lucky enough to sit at the table with Petra Ålund, who at that time was Head of Technology at SEB. I really enjoyed getting to have a conversation with her then. I really didn’t expect to build so many relationships. Through the programme, I connected with people across the bank who all provided valuable advice on how to progress in my career.”
What would you like to say to someone thinking about applying to the Tech Programme?
“Don’t hesitate. It’s a fantastic journey full of interesting studies, new connections, and great events. You’ll be learning in a safe environment where everyone supports you.” For anyone considering the SEB Tech Programme, Jeļena’s message is simple: “Go for it. It’s an experience you won’t regret.”
What do you look forward to in your future at SEB?
“I want to continue growing as a software developer, and one day I hope to join the SEB Tech League. It’s a seven-month programme for professionals, and it’s definitely my next goal. I have also applied for a master’s degree in software engineering this year, which I look forward to.”
