Axfood is a food retail group reaching five million customers in Sweden each week. Reducing its fossil fuel emissions has been a top priority since 2008. The company has installed both small- and large-scale solar power facilities on its rooftops and implemented numerous energy-saving measures. Axfood already buys 100% renewable electricity yet is now securing its own supply.
Axfood has signed a 12-year power purchase agreement (PPA) to buy renewable electricity from Alight. The PPA enables Alight, an independent solar power producer for large-scale projects across Europe, to build and operate a new solar park.
The facility, currently under construction, is three times larger than any existing solar park in Sweden. It will generate 63 gigawatt hours of renewable energy annually – equating to approximately 15% of Axfood's total electricity consumption – and boost the total supply available in the country.
Construction of the new solar park was realized with a green loan from SEB to Alight. Through advice and new types of financing, we support the acceleration towards a low-carbon economy.
