According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), six times more metals and minerals are needed in clean energy systems compared to traditional hydrocarbon resources.
To meet the global demands, Boliden is investing in fully electrifying mining operations at its Kristineberg site, going from diesel to fossil free energy. This initiative enables them to mine copper and zinc almost entirely without CO2 emission, marking a milestone for Boliden in offering their customers low carbon metals and supporting the global energy transition.

The electrification of the Kristineberg site supported by hydro- and wind power is a milestone project. It is part of the total efforts Boliden is making to reduce their CO2 equivalent emissions in scope 1 and 2 (own operation). The whole of Boliden aims to reduce 40% of direct and indirect CO2 equivalent emissions in scope 1 and 2 (own operation) by 2030 and 30% of indirect CO2 equivalent emissions in scope 3 (full value chain) by 2030, compared to the base year of 2021.For more details, see Boliden's sustainability reports
