With more than 3,500 employees in around 15 countries, SEB’s tech organisation is one of the largest in Sweden. Together, they are developing the bank of the future through technological expertise, innovation, and a clear mission: to ensure that the bank’s systems are accessible, secure, and future proof.
Henrik Magnusson, Head of Group Technology, leads the work of building the bank of the future. Here, he shares more about the mission, what makes SEB an exciting workplace for tech talent, and why technology plays a central role in the bank’s core business.
What does your role as Head of Group Technology involve?
– My role is to lead SEB’s global tech organisation and ensure we have the right technological capabilities in place to operate efficiently and continue evolving. We carry a dual responsibility – to keep the bank’s systems secure and accessible, while proactively driving innovation. We need to keep the bank both safe and open. This means constantly balancing stability with development, which places high demands on competence, collaboration, and technological choices.
How does new technology impact your work?
– New technology affects us every day, but we constantly need to weigh innovation against regulation, security, and compliance requirements. We can't afford to stand on the sidelines, especially when it comes to areas like AI and cloud. These technologies offer tremendous opportunities, but only if we can translate them into value in a secure and timely way. Time to market is critical. At the same time, our way of developing systems is fundamentally changing. We're already seeing how automation and intelligent agents are becoming part of the development process.
How does SEB compare when it comes to technological innovation?
– I think we hold our own very well. Our ability to innovate comes from how quickly we adopt new technology and put them into practice. SEB has been around since 1856, and we wouldn't have lasted this long without a strong capacity for renewal. Innovation is part of our DNA – but there’s always more to do. We’re not just competing with other banks, but with the entire tech world for both solutions and talent.
What makes SEB a great employer for tech professionals?
– There’s an incredible breadth of expertise here, and just as wide a range of roles. You’ll be working with highly skilled colleagues and taking part in major transformation journeys, both within the bank and across the industry. Here, tech is not a support function on the side – it’s an integrated part of product, business, and process development. Things will continue to move even faster, both in the world around us and within the bank, and AI will play an enormously important role in that transformation. That means you, as a tech professional, will be right where things happen, making a real impact and contributing to something bigger.
What role does SEB’s societal mission play in your leadership?
– It’s a big part of why I come to work. We have a critical role in society and are part of a wider ecosystem that also contributes to research and development through the Wallenberg Foundations. There’s a purpose that goes beyond quarterly results – and you can feel that in the culture. The expectations placed on us are high, but so is the level of engagement.
