Real estate sector

Sustainability is vital for the future of real estate.

As a society, we spend a significant amount of time, resources, and activities in the built environment. Therefore, it is important for real estate investors and developers to take social values and environmental impact into account. Having a sound financial strategy requires an alignment with sustainability goals.

At the heart of the real estate transition lies energy efficiency. Currently, the real estate and construction sector account for 33% of global annual emissions and more than 40% of the world’s energy consumption. The data is presented in the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative report, Integrating Climate Risks In Real Estate.

Buildings have a direct impact on the environment through their operations and energy consumption. Construction materials such as cement, steel, aluminum, and plastics also play an indirect part in increasing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. By improving energy performance in buildings and reducing emissions from materials and processes, the real estate sector is actively pursuing ways to reduce its energy consumption and move towards a more circular society.

Alongside energy measures and reduction of environmental footprint, the real estate sector plays an important role in driving social and environmental benefits. According to United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, by 2050, two-thirds of the world's population is projected to live in cities. Addressing social challenges and improving biodiversity will be key in building stronger communities and creating resilience in our towns and cities.

Sustainability at the core of our business

At SEB, we advocate for a resilient and orderly transition to a low-carbon economy.

By leveraging our deep understanding of our customers, their business environments, preferences, and needs, we aim to help them identify sustainable business opportunities and manage potential risks.

Real estate represents one of the largest business areas within SEB, with a primary focus on the Nordics and the German markets. This is a significant business area due to the substantial investment it requires, the long-term nature of property assets, and the critical role properties play in both residential and commercial activities.

We support large listed and privately owned companies, as well as funds active in the real estate sector. Our dedicated and experienced real estate team provides specialised advice and sector-focused products to ensure that our clients receive the right support.
