I got to network with people from all over SEB
For Katrine Fabricius, SEB's Tech programme me was a way to kick-start her career within the bank. She explains why she chose a career in IT and the many opportunities that come with working at a large, international company.
After graduating high school, Katrine Fabricius began working as an order handler. In this role, she came in contact with various business systems and got an insight into the possibilities of technology. Developing an understanding of the improvements that needed to be made sparked an interest in IT.
– That was when I realised that people actually work with IT, which eventually led to me studying information systems at Lunds University.
“Everybody needs a bank”
While studying, Katrine caught interest in SEB's Tech programme after hearing about it at a conference in Uppsala. The conference was held by DataTjej, a non-profit organisation aiming to bring women within tech together. So, after receiving her degree in information systems last year, Katrine decided to apply to the programme.
– Everybody needs a bank. So, working in an industry that I myself am so dependent on felt exciting. It also felt very valuable to work at a large company with many opportunities to grow and evolve.
The programme, which goes on for six months, allows trainees to work half-time with the specific role they have applied for. The remaining time is spent on different learning and networking activities within the programme. For Katrine, the role of Solution Developer was the most intriguing.
– I work with automating Front-end-tests within the product area “Spara och Investera”. This means that I code tests that we later reuse to make sure that our applications look and work as they should. The role includes a lot of problem-solving, which I enjoy. I also like working closely with developers, those working with requirements and UX.
Large network
Katrine describes the Tech programme as a great way to learn more about the bank's different areas, and a good opportunity to network with people from all over SEB. She explains that working with different tech projects is also a good way to create personal growth.
– Due to Covid 19, large parts of the programme were digital. However, we still got the chance to socialise in person, for example when we got to visit the office. I have gotten to know many people, both from the tech programme and the trainee programme, with which we had many joint activities. We also got to meet with colleagues from the different departments of SEB.
Taking care of employees
Katrine will soon be taking on a part-time role as Scrum Master, which means that she will be helping her team plan and deliver different tasks. At the same time, she will be planning sprints and collaborating with other teams.
– From my experience, SEB really cares for internal competencies and that all employees continue to grow. Next week, for example, we will be having an internal career event at the office, where we get to mingle and network with different departments and divisions within the bank. I feel very happy with where I am right now, however, in the future I would maybe like to try a different role within the bank.
