I’ve built a valuable network for my future within SEB

Lauri Suvanto, a 2023 finance graduate from Aalto University, joined SEB as a Deputy Business Manager through the bank's International Trainee Programme. As a trainee based in Helsinki, Lauri has navigated the diverse and dynamic world of banking, even travelling to several of SEB’s site offices. Here, he tells us more about his trainee year and shares valuable tips for those interested in applying.

Reflecting on his time at the bank, Lauri shares, “When I graduated, I had already gained experience from two accounting firms, spending nearly a year as a Junior Consultant. Though I already had a full-time job, a recruiter from SEB reached out, and after learning more about the International Trainee Programme, I was intrigued. The opportunity to delve into banking and build an international network, coupled with positive experiences from friends who had worked at SEB, motivated me to apply. I was lucky enough to get the position, and my experience has definitely lived up to expectations.”

Tell us more about your current role! What does your job entail?

“I work as a Deputy Business Manager in Corporate Banking Sales, specialising in Cash Management. My role is mainly client-facing and involves preparing and delivering client presentations, advising clients on diverse topics and engaging in internal development projects with the rest of my team.”

Lauri also emphasises the learning opportunities within SEB, stating, “During the Trainee Programme, we had many opportunities to explore other areas. Besides tasks related to my home team, I did short rotations at different teams, attended info sessions from various departments in the Helsinki office, and even travelled abroad to visit other SEB sites.”

SEB’s unique environment

The international nature of the bank is something Lauri highlights as a standout feature. “The international exposure through travel allowed me to learn from various people, connect with trainees in other countries and join in on fun activities and events. This expanded my perspective, giving me a wealth of knowledge about banking and SEB, from its history to business practices, along with the valuable network I’ve built for my future career.”

He also appreciates SEB’s open and approachable culture, saying: “The bank’s environment is very open, with a hierarchy that’s much flatter compared to other companies. People are easy to approach and I appreciate that you can exchange knowledge and information with pretty much anyone. To me, that’s very important in regards to growth and well-being, and is something I believe to be a great strength within the bank.”

Do you have any advice for aspiring trainees?

“For those considering the International Trainee Programme, I highly encourage you to apply if you want to learn new things, build a network and have plenty of fun along the way. And to future trainees – this is a unique period in your life, so be open-minded, enjoy the ride and shape a path that supports your future in the bank. Also, don’t put too much pressure on yourself. No one expects you to know everything, but do try to be brave enough to ask questions, even when uncomfortable. If anything, it shows eagerness and can benefit the whole group.”
