Transforming the old into modern, flexible solutions is a lot of fun

With a passion for tech and a natural aptitude for problem-solving, Simon Wagemyr has found his role as a Tech Lead within Google Cloud Platform (GCP) at SEB. Here, he drives the development of advanced cloud solutions, a challenge that aligns with his desire to continuously learn and grow.
Simon is a self-taught developer, letting his curiosity guide him. “I’ve always been fascinated by computers and technology. Most of what I know, I’ve learned on my own through experimentation. I have my own servers at home, and I’ve worked in roles involving computers in various ways. I’ve worked as a consultant, graphic designer, web developer, sound and lighting technician, and NOC technician. In many contexts, I have created tools for efficiency and automation, even though it wasn’t part of my official role. I wanted to develop further and take on bigger challenges. That’s how I ended up at SEB,” he explains.
What’s the best part of your role as Tech Lead?
“As a Tech Lead, I have overall responsibility for our team and projects within GCP. We work on migrating and developing cloud-based solutions for SEB’s Core Custody data, which involves tackling complex technical problems and building robust systems for the future. It’s exciting to be at the centre of technical discussions, especially when you’re surrounded by such talented colleagues.”
What’s the most exciting part of working with GCP at SEB?
“There are so many interesting problems to solve. The banking sector is complex, and we deal with data and systems built up over decades. Transforming the old into modern, flexible solutions is both challenging and fun.”
Simon explains that the ‘Cloud First’ initiative is relatively new at SEB, marking the beginning of a major, ongoing transformation. “It hasn’t been entirely straightforward, but now we have a clear direction, and what lies ahead is the really exciting part. Another advantage of the cloud environment is the abundance of tools available for solving specific problems. There are no long processes to access resources—the DevOps approach is built into the GCP framework.”
What would you like to say to someone interested in a tech role at SEB?
“It’s a great employer for anyone with a lot of drive—it’s your own ambition that sets the boundaries. We also have an incredible team culture, with open communication and a strong focus on learning. We review each other’s code and ask questions if something isn’t clear. Everyone shares their knowledge, and we learn a lot from one another. If you’re curious and want to work in an environment where your engagement is noticed and valued, SEB is the right place for you.”
