Carbon removals
One essential step to achieve Net-Zero.

Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) is an important part in the process to reach net-zero goals. It involves capturing CO2 from the atmosphere and storing it securely in natural reservoirs or products.
Key methods include natural solutions like afforestation and soil sequestration, as well as technological approaches such as Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS).
To effectively integrate carbon removals into net-zero strategies, companies have to complement emission reductions, not replace them, as emphasized by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Carbon removals are designed to neutralize residual emissions on top of reduction efforts.
Setting net-zero targets should be backed by credible plans to address residual emissions; otherwise, investors and stakeholders may question their validity. High-quality carbon removal solutions need to meet standards of durability, verification, and minimal risk of reversal. The EU is currently developing regulations to enforce these criteria, and companies subject to the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) will be required to disclose their strategies for neutralizing residual emissions from 2025.
Carbon removal certificates – a part of our transition advisory
With over 3,500 companies committed to net-zero targets with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), demand for carbon removals could reach 5.4 Gt CO2e by 2050. However, current availability remains limited, especially for technology-based solutions. Price risks also persist, particularly due to the scarcity of these solutions and the land constraints affecting nature-based options.
By purchasing Carbon Removal Certificates, companies can support the development of high-quality carbon removal projects while meeting their net-zero goals.
SEB has done extensive mapping and due diligence of CDR projects and as part of our transition advisory we offer corporates and institutions the opportunity to buy carbon dioxide removal (CDR) certificates from selected high-quality projects.
