SEB helps TRATON GROUP launch green finance framework

SEB has advised commercial vehicle manufacturer TRATON GROUP on its debut green finance framework, laying the groundwork for future green bond issuances and other sustainable financing tools.

The framework focuses on battery electric vehicles and covers the whole value chain – from research and development to production, financial services and charging infrastructure. All proceeds will be used exclusively for investments in this category.

TRATON GROUP is one of the world’s leading commercial vehicle manufacturers and includes the brands Scania, MAN, International, and Volkswagen Truck & Bus.

“This framework allows TRATON, for the first time at the group level, to finance the entire electrification value chain with green financial instruments,” says Alexandra Themistocli, Head of Sustainability DACH at SEB. “It also offers investors a high level of transparency through clearly defined goals and annual reporting.”

DACH is an acronym used to describe the German-speaking countries in Europe collectively.

SEB acted as the sole green structuring advisor. The framework received the highest rating, “Dark Green”, from S&P Global Ratings, confirming its alignment with the Green Bond Principles and Loan Principles.

“TRATON’s framework stands out for its clarity and detailed disclosure,” says Fredrik von Platen, Director, Sustainable Finance Debt Capital Markets at SEB. “It goes beyond market practice by providing concrete examples of eligible investments that deliver measurable climate benefits.”

The initiative supports TRATON’s broader goal of transforming the transport sector through electrification. Key steps include expanding its electric truck and bus offerings and building the necessary infrastructure.
SEB’s experts note that there is a persistently strong demand for green bonds in Europe, despite the headwinds in other parts of the world.

“This is underpinned not least by continued capital flows into dedicated sustainability credit funds in the eurozone,” says Björn Daniel at Debt Capital Markets in Frankfurt.
