SEB-fund is Nordic Fund of the Year

Tommi Saukkoriipi

The SEB Nordic Equity fund won the Nordic Fund of the Year award when Fondmarknaden.se nominated the best funds in 2021.

“This confirms once again that our long-term management process is working, which is naturally really great news for the team,” says Tommi Saukkoriipi, principal manager of the fund and manager of the Swedish-Nordic equities team.

Once a year, Fondmarknaden.se nominates the year’s best funds in ten different fund categories, as well as the Fund of the Year, Newcomer of the Year and Fund Management Company of the Year. Last year, SEB’s Sverigefond Småbolag Chans/Risk scooped up both the Fund of the Year and the Swedish Fund of the Year award. This year, it was SEB Nordic Equity Fund’s turn.

The motivation for the award is:

"The Nordic Fund of the Year award goes to a fund that has succeeded in spotting the right stocks in the industrial, financial and healthcare sectors, thereby securing its unit holders very good risk-adjusted returns in 2021. Among the largest holdings are such companies as Investor, Novo Nordisk, Volvo and Sandvik."

What have you in the team done to be so successful? What are the success factors?

" Our process focuses on stock picking, whereby we build the portfolio from the bottom up, based on quality stocks with a proven business model, skilled management, interesting growth prospects, cash flows and balance sheets, and, not least, a relevant sustainability focus. Company visits are an important aspect, as we seek to keep track of not only our holdings, but also international competitors, subcontractors, distributors, consultants, authorities, etc. in order to monitor developments to the best of our ability. So this is not a one-man show, but stimulating and fun teamwork, where together we help each other to spot the best shares," says Tommi Saukkoriipi.

The funds are ranked according to the following parameters:

  1. Returns in 2021
  2. Average return over the past 3 years
  3. Sharpe ratio (risk-adjusted return) 1 and 3 years
  4. Sustainability rating by category (Morningstar’s sustainability rating)

The 2021 funds of the year were nominated from among the around 1,800 funds traded on the Fondmarknaden.se fund trading platform.
