Peter and Teresas journey from Stockholm to Angola

Peter and Teresa Leimdörfer are united by a mission to uplift communities worldwide. With Peter's finance career in Sweden and Teresa's resilient background from war-torn Angola, they focus on education, women's rights, and poverty alleviation. Peter's involvement with UNICEF, including eye-opening trips to Malawi, has deepened their commitment.

Despite their polarising histories, Peter and Teresa share a deep dedication to helping others. Their partnership, which began nearly 15 years ago, led to the founding of the Guldhjulet Foundation, which supports organisations in Sweden fighting violence, oppression, and discrimination.

Peter's commitment to making a difference was sparked during his time chairing a UNICEF business advisory council, with a transformative trip to Malawi that opened his eyes to the harsh realities faced by many. This experience cemented his desire to help in meaningful ways.

Teresa's journey to philanthropy was forged through personal adversity. After moving to Sweden for love, she faced the challenges of being a single mother in a new country. She learned the language and found her footing, building a resilient new life for herself. When she met Peter, they discovered their shared passion for aiding others.

The Guldhjulet Foundation they created carefully selects organisations to fund, ensuring these groups can sustain their work over the long term. "It’s similar to making investments," Peter explains, "where the real impact is made by the people running the organisations."

Their philanthropic work extends beyond Sweden's borders. Teresa, who once had reservations about engaging in efforts back in Angola, has changed her perspective. During a recent visit, she and Peter worked closely with Nfulu Amuana, a local organisation that supports vulnerable children. They provided musical instruments and facilitated the donation of computers, actively seeing the impact of their support.

Peter emphasises the importance of allowing organisations the autonomy to use funds where they are most needed. He compares their approach to that of investors who trust in the potential of their ventures. "Governments may need more control over funding, but as private donors, we can be more direct and effective," he notes.

The Leimdörfers exemplify the profound impact of personal commitment in philanthropy. Their approach demonstrates how trusting and collaborating with local organisations can lead to significant, lasting changes. They continue to inspire with their hands-on involvement and unwavering dedication to making a difference where it matters most.
