Surging interest in alternative assets

Poor equity returns and record-low bond yields spur surging interest for alternative assets, writes SEB’s X-asset team in one of a pair of recent reports.

The X-asset team feels to make choices on these alternative assets, analysts and managers rely on recent quantitative data to make decision. However, “if you are only looking at the last 10 years, you don’t know what you’re doing,” they write.

For the reports, which complement each other, SEB’s X-asset team limited its research to alternative assets that demonstrate performance over many decades (85+ years) to take account of changing macro climates and produce a truly systemic overview.

The key recommendation is that diversification into alternative assets allows continued long-term exposure to equities, ensuring portfolios can capture the upside when equity markets return to strong performance - even if it takes another 5-10 years before this happens.
